Tools & Utensils

Indians were astonished that fur traders would give them knives, kettles, axes, and all sorts of useful tools for carving and even blacksmithing in exchange for furs that the Indians had in excess. Instead of careful and laborious transportation of an earthen pot containing live coals (this was entrusted to elders) from one camp site to the next, protecting it from rain or snow or from being dropped, and constantly feeding it kindling, the trader provided fire steels and burning glasses so that any Indian might make a fire in a few minutes.
